Baron Wolman - The Rolling Stone Years

Blender Gallery is excited to welcome Baron Wolman - the first photographer to work for America’s legendary Rolling Stone magazine to Australia!

Baron Wolman himself will land in Sydney in September to launch this his book and exhibition, "Every Picture Tells a Story, Baron Wolman, The Rolling Stone Years". A first-hand account of the halcyon days of rock n’roll and his memorable encounters with the rock stars of the day.

Baron Wolman will be at Blender Gallery on Saturday September 17th from 12pm for an exclusive book signing.

Featuring iconic rock shots from the 60’s and 70’s, The Rolling Stone Years tells the previously untold story behind the photographs of rock’s most fertile era. From Jimi Hendrix to Johnny Cash, from Miles Davis to The Who, one man’s camera captured the times that really were “a-Changing”: been there, done that, photographed it all.

The first photographer to work for America’s legendary Rolling Stone magazine, Baron Wolman, will be in Australia in September to launch this first-hand account of the halcyon days of rock n’roll and his memorable encounters with the rock stars of the day. The book will be launched in conjunction with an exhibition of Wolman’s photographs.

Fueled by the music and the times, Rolling Stone magazine was founded in 1967 by Jann Wenner. Among his friends interested in working on the project was the then 30 year old freelance photojournalist, Baron Wolman. During his three year tenure with Rolling Stone, Wolman’s lens captured the royalty of the 60’s and 70’s pop and rock explosion. This collection of pictures and the stories behind them cover some of the most significant artists and events in the history of rock n’ roll.

The Rolling Stone Years makes it easy to see why Wolman’s photographs became Rolling Stone’s graphic centerpiece during the three years they were published regularly in the magazine. Over 40 years later, those same photographs, picture memories of the ‘60s, are now widely exhibited and collected. And Baron’s long-time mantra, “Mixing Business With Pleasure Since 1965,” continues to be his guiding light. “You can’t plan for a career like mine,” he says. “Yes, I chose to be a professional photographer but my tour of duty with Rolling Stone was a fortunate accident, a gift from the photo gods.”

Baron Wolman was the first-ever photographer for Rolling Stone magazine. During his three year tenure at the magazine he captured some of the biggest names in music. Since leaving Rolling Stone in 1970 he has focused on such diverse subjects as authors, fashionistas, professional sports, airplanes and bridges. A qualified pilot, he has also published several widely-praised collections of aerial photography and continues to exhibit his work around the world today.
