After his success with his last exhibition ‘Icebergs Ahead’ (shown at Blender Gallery in 2005), Matt Hoyle returns with his most personal exhibition to date – ‘Yesterday in America’.
‘Yesterday in America’ endeavours to capture the memories of America from Hoyle’s childhood. Ironically, the memories are not even from his personal experiences, but an amalgamation of imagery from TV, movies, posters and stories, which he has since romanticized, were there.
The dying America from yesteryear: the big haired waitress; the aging debutante from the south; the classic New York scene straight out of an old black and white film; and the small town barber who doesn’t even know what a personal Stylist is?.
These images are about the charm of a bygone era. From a time of innocence and promise rather than what it has unfortunately become today.
“It does seem like just yesterday to me and I've spent the last few years trying to uncover the people and places that are on the edge of extinction” – Matt Hoyle
Matt Hoyle is an internationally recognised commercial photographer who shoots advertising and editorial work both in America and South East Asia. Matt’s photography is known equally for its rich character and narrative as well as the unique treatment he gives to each image afterwards.
Hoyle switched careers from being an award-winning Creative Director to a commercial photographer shooting both advertising and editorial – where he still tries to maintain a level of distinction and creativity for every piece he shoots. Because of this, Hoyle has been recognized by some of the photographic industry’s most respected awards (see over).
While Matt’s commercial work keeps him busy, he makes sure he finds time to create personal projects - Matt has exhibited in galleries worldwide including the Farmani Gallery in Los Angeles, the National Portrait Gallery in London, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Australia.
