‘For the past two years the artist Katie Cordes has observed one man in the Sydney CBD. He doesn’t know he is being watched. He doesn’t know he is being photographed. Very soon Katie Cordes will be exhibiting the resulting work from this remarkable time.’

On February 24th 2005 a new exhibition opens at Paddington’s Blender Gallery.
THE WALNUT MAN is a real person in the Sydney city who artist Katie Cordes has been observing for the past two years.
The show is about the attachments we make to people we don’t know. How anonymous strangers can become very important to our daily lives for just being there - The human ability of reaching out for other humans and our necessity to ‘belong’ to something.
Katie Cordes’s work is conceptual in its nature and the mediums used vary from large format photographs printed on canvas to small pencil drawings.
“The Walnut Man first came to my attention because he was always writing on a laptop in a public place – which I’m fairly convinced was a novel. He could be famous- About to launch his next book. It is all speculation. Because THE WALNUT MAN doesn’t know he is the subject of this show. It’s unlikely he ever will.”
- Katie Cordes
