On February 3rd 2005 a new exhibition opens at Paddington’s Blender Gallery.
This is the first of Blender Gallery’s exhibition’s for 2005 and what a better way to start the year off than with the launch of a new artist, Dee Smart.
Dee Smart’s exhibition aptly titled “Iced Vo-Vo’s & Tea” is a collection of beautiful still life drawings, which celebrates the love of bric a brac, old cups and saucers, jewels and collectables that the artist treasures.
The works delve into the beauty and simplicity of femininity.
The well-known Australian film and television actress’ recent pregnancies prompted her to start a new direction in her life.
“There’s just not a lot of roles for pregnant woman (believe it or not!) and I couldn’t see how I was going to act as well as raise my child so I went and got myself some paper and started drawing” Smart explains.
“Every time my baby went to sleep I picked up a pencil, charcoal, or brush and off I went! I am incredibly lucky to have found this outlet, I love nothing more than getting a new piece of paper home and up on my easel, with nothing between me and creativity”.
After walking off the set of Channel Nine’s Water Rats, three months pregnant with her first child, Dee has seen herself truly develop as a person.
Motherhood has taught her how to truly ‘be there’, and without this she would have never discovered this artistic side of herself.
This development in Smart’s life is uniquely expressed in her artworks, created using chalks, pastels, watercolours, and charcoals.
She focuses on objects in which she finds serenity, a delicious calming nature, or nurture as you may have it.
Iced Vo-Vo’s & Tea opens at Blender Gallery on Thursday February 3rd 2005 and will run until February 22nd. Dee Smart is very excited to be supporting Big hArt with a donation from this exhibition.
