Renée Pinto’s 2007 show “When I grow up I want to be a dancer…” is a tribute to the art of dance.
Having worked in the entertainment industry, as well as growing up surrounded by her many dancer friends, Renée’s latest exhibition is one which portrays the beauty & femininity of dance.
Having been surrounded by the art of dance her whole life, yet not a dancer herself, Pinto wanted to create the beauty & softness that she relates to the word dance.
“I wanted to show the softer side of dance. With my painting, I am noted for very feminine, soft & tranquil pieces and I wanted to show that element in this photographic story of dance.”
Renée photographed two dancers from the Brent Street School of Performing Arts. These images were shot in an old warehouse studio, where she wanted to create simple lines with the dancers & accentuate the beautiful colours & mood of the old studio.
“It was quite an amusing shoot, as I was not up to speed with all the dance terms, so had to demonstrate exactly what I was after – which would have been very amusing for professionally trained dancers like the two in my shoot. I can honestly say when I grew up I didn’t become a dancer!”
Simplicity is what this exhibition is all about. The works create their own mood with great movement, which is enhanced by the dark mood of the photographs.
